Your Nervous System: The Missing Piece in Your Healing Journey

A few years ago, I promised myself I wouldn’t lose my temper during an important conversation with someone I loved and deeply cared about.

I had rehearsed what I wanted to say. I journaled, meditated, even visualized the entire talk going smoothly.

But when the moment came, my chest tightened. My throat closed. My words came out sharp and shaky. Nothing like the calm, grounded version of me I had pictured.

Afterward, I felt defeated. I had done the work. So why did my body betray me?

Maybe you’ve been there, too.

You’ve read the books.

You’ve hired the coach.

You’ve journaled, meditated, visualized.

And still, when you’re triggered, you don’t respond the way you want to.

You either shut down. Or explode. Or spiral into overthinking and self-blame.

The truth is, healing isn’t just in your mind.

It’s in your body.

Your nervous system remembers what your thoughts try to override.

It’s like driving a car with one foot on the gas and the other on the brake. You’re trying to move forward, but your body is still bracing for danger. No wonder it feels exhausting.

Think about it. You promise yourself you’ll stay calm with your partner, but the second tension rises, your body reacts before you can think. You know you’re safe giving a presentation, but your heart races and your throat closes anyway. You meditate every morning, but the moment a difficult conversation or unexpected challenge comes up, your nervous system flips into fight-or-flight before you can hold it together.

This isn’t a lack of willpower. It isn’t that you’re not disciplined enough or spiritual enough. It’s your nervous system doing exactly what it was wired to do. Protect you.

You’ve probably heard the phrase the body keeps the score. Well, your nervous system keeps it, too. That’s why affirmations, journaling, or just telling yourself to let it go don’t always work. Your body hasn’t gotten the message yet. (And if you haven’t read the book The Body Keeps the Score, I highly recommend you do. It’s a game-changer.)

The good news is, the version of you who thrives, rests deeply, speaks clearly and feels safe already exists. But she can only come alive when your nervous system learns it doesn’t have to slam the brakes every time life happens.

It's time to ask yourself: Are you showing up as the version of you who is free to move forward, or the version of you still bracing for danger?

When you notice these patterns in yourself, it’s a sign your nervous system is asking for care. That’s exactly what we’ll do in my 3-day mini retreat . . . three days of simple, restorative practices to bring your body and mind back into harmony.

Because true healing isn’t just about what you know. It’s about how deeply your body can feel safe enough to let go.
